GoldandBlack.com Purdue player draft: No. 17 overall

This summer, the Boilermakers are being divided.

Reporters Stacy Clardie and Kyle Charters are going head-to-head in GoldandBlack.com's Purdue player draft, a daily selection in which separate rosters of 25 are being assembled over the next two months. In late July, we'll decide — based on GoldandBlack.com staff and member feedback — which team would win.

Clardie has the No. 17 overall selection and she chooses …

Elijah Sindelar got better this spring under first-year QB coach Tim Lester. And he certainly has starter potential.

Kyle’s right — and I don’t say that very often — I do really like Markus Bailey and would love to have him on my team. I’m not sure he projects better than Jimmy Herman if we’re talking outside linebacker skill set at this point in their respective careers, though. Still, Bailey has tons of upside. Maybe I’ll get a chance to draft him at some point. But not now.

I have a couple other guys I’d like to take with this pick, but I’ve risked not selecting a legitimate quarterback for too long. I can’t wait anymore.

So, Elijah Sindelar, finally, is off the board.

David Blough is the starter for good reason — he’s more experienced and there’s no substitute for playing in games. He’s a better quarterback because of it. Working with Tim Lester this spring, both quarterbacks got better, so Blough still has an edge in the “real world.”

But Sindelar has something Blough never will: A prototype quarterback body, standing at 6-foot-4, weighing about 230 pounds. That allows him to stand tall in the pocket and have no difficulty finding throwing alleys, something Blough admittedly has an issue with. Sindelar also has a powerful arm, and he showed good accuracy in the spring on a variety of throws. He has a pretty deep ball, but he just as easily can zip it over the middle of the field — where Cameron Posey will be roaming for my team.

Sindelar doesn't get enough credit for his mobility, either. I know Kyle thinks his higher-than-needed Evan Panfil pick can create some disruption on my O-line, but even if that's the case, a healthy — and strong — Sindelar can still make plays outside the pocket. Maybe even slip out of a backfield tackle or two.
