GoldandBlack.com's Purdue player draft: No. 30 overall
This summer, the Boilermakers are being divided.
Reporters Stacy Clardie and Kyle Charters are going head-to-head in GoldandBlack.com's Purdue player draft, a daily selection in which separate rosters of 25 are being assembled. In late July, we'll decide — based on GoldandBlack.com staff and member feedback — which team would win.
Charters has pick No. 30 ...
If Stacy wasn't going to pick Anthony Mahoungou at 29 — that bluff was a total fail — and take an offensive lineman instead, I would have thought it would have been Mike Mendez.
But she went with Bearooz Yacoobi instead.
OK.
I suppose his versatility is a plus, but now she's stuck without a guard (or a tackle) and who will it be? She seems opposed to taking J.C. Jalen Neal, but that's got to be her eventual choice, right? There's no one else. She probably could have had Mendez and Yacoobi, because I would have picked Neal as my next OL, put him at right tackle and moved Matt McCann to left guard.
But I'll take this scenario over that. In Mendez, I get a young — only a redshirt freshman, but one who has been in the program since spring of 2015 — up-and-comer who might get a chance to start contributing in 2017. The 6-foot-4, 302-pounder has good size and plays physical, despite his age. He's still developing — obviously — but there are a lot of tools there. And Purdue has moved him around a bit too, as he's lined up most often at guard but has slid out to tackle, also. Anyone know if he can snap?
Aside from center, which is a bit of a question, I like how my offensive line has shaped, especially considering Stacy had made hers a priority early. Still, I managed two likely starters, plus the two top reserves.
