Purdue extends Versyp to 2022

Purdue has given Sharon Versyp a two-year contract extension, keeping her on the Boilermaker sideline through 2021-2022.

In 10 years at Purdue, Versyp has a program-record 214 wins, with eight NCAA Tournament appearances and four Big Ten titles.

“This contract provides our women’s basketball program with the stability it needs to maintain success and continue its rich tradition,” said athletic director Morgan Burke in a release. “It recognizes the talented roster that Coach Versyp and her staff are returning this fall, and pays credit to the outstanding young women that will join the Boilermakers for the 2016-17 season.”

Versyp, who has a career record of 331-185 in 16 seasons, moved into first-place all-time in Purdue wins, passing Lin Dunn, in a victory over Indiana last season. She helped guide the Boilermakers back to the NCAA Tournament this year, going 20-12, after they had missed the tourney with a last-place Big Ten finish the year before. She has guided Purdue to a pair of Elite Eights and two Sweet 16s, the last being a regional final appearance in 2008-09. She's also won four Big Ten Tournament titles, including back-to-back in 2012 and 2013.

“I would like to express the utmost gratitude to the university and our administration for their faith in me and my staff,” Versyp said in the release. “It has been an incredible journey to lead my alma mater for the last 10 seasons, and I’m thankful for the opportunity and confidence to lead this program for many years to come.

“My staff and I have worked extremely hard to bring outstanding young women into the Purdue women’s basketball family, and to help them achieve great things, both on and off the court. We have a championship mentality in all walks of life, working to be great examples of everything Purdue stands for and has to offer the world.”

Versyp has a spot to fill on her staff, after Kelly Komara took an assistant position at Vanderbilt, joining former teammate Stephanie White and former head coach Carolyn Peck. Komara, who helped Purdue to the 1999 national championship and the '01 title game, was an assistant for two seasons in West Lafayette.
