Purdue will hire Oregon assistant Mark Wasikowski as its new baseball coach, sources told GoldandBlack.com Wednesday evening.

Wasikowski, who was the Ducks' recruiting coordinator, was one of two finalists, interviewing for the job over the last week. The Seal Beach, Calif., native has spent much of his career on the West Coast, coaching as an assistant for 10 years at Arizona before his five-year stint at Oregon.

Along with running the Ducks' recruiting efforts, he also was in charge of offense and coached the outfielders and baserunners.

During his five seasons at Oregon, the Ducks were 205-106, with four straight NCAA regional appearances before they missed the tournament with a 29-26 record this season. Wasikowski's recruiting has been steady in the top-25 while at Oregon, with the '13 class being as high as sixth by Perfect Game and the '15 class at eighth in Collegiate Baseball Rankings.

Following back-to-back seasons in 2013 and '14, Perfect Game also said Wasikowski was one of 10 assistant coaches who are “ready to lead.”

He gets that chance now at Purdue, where he replaces longtime coach Doug Schreiber, who resigned in May after 18 years at the helm of his alma mater.

Wasikowski started his playing career at Hawai'i, before going to a J.C. then on to Pepperdine, helping the Waves to the 1992 national championship. He also has coaching experience at Florida, Pepperdine and SEMO.

As GoldandBlack.com reported June 17, when Purdue had narrowed to its finalists, sources have indicated that the new coach would receive a multiyear contract.
