Purdue has landed its guard target for 2016, as Michigan graduate transfer Spike Albrecht has committed to the Boilermakers, he announced Tuesday morning.

The former Wolverine will be immediately eligible to play out his final season of eligibility, provided he secures a waiver from the Big Ten due to his transfer within the conference. It was not an issue last year for Michigan-to-Indiana transfer Max Bielfeldt.

Albrecht was shut down midway through this past season by Michigan due to his recovery from hip surgery. He hopes to be deemed fully recovered by doctors on May 17, which would represent a full year post-operation. He played just nine games last season before sitting out the rest of the season.

In his last healthy season at Michigan, as a junior in 2014-15, the Crown Point native averaged seven-and-a-half point and just under four assists, while shooting 37 percent from three-point range. But he is best remembered for his improbable 17-point outburst against Louisville in the 2013 national title game as a freshman.

Albrecht chose Purdue over a slew of interested parties, including Wichita State and Syracuse, the two schools he'd expressed interest in visiting before making a decision.

He will join incumbent P.J. Thompson and newcomer Carsen Edwards in Purdue's mix at point guard next season. Before adding Albrecht, Purdue was set to have only four guards on scholarship next season.
