Purdue strikes again in Ohio, at wide receiver

Brevin Harris is Purdue's ninth commitment, second at wide receiver and second overall in as many days.

More: Purdue commitments

Purdue struck another blow in its looming rebuild at wide receiver on Saturday when it landed Ohio's Brevin Harris during an unofficial visit to West Lafayette.

The Boilermakers will be decimated by graduation at receiver following this season and have sold their acute need for immediate contributors to their 2017 targets, Harris included.

The 6-foot-5, 180-pound Rivals.com three-star prospect from Norwayne High School in Creston, Ohio, joins C.J. Hayes as Purdue's two early wide receiver commits.

"Coach (Marcus Freeman) told me, 'If we can get both of you guys, that's going to be a great start to starting our new wide receiver group,'" Harris said. "They said, 'We need one more and we want you to take that spot.'"

Like the 6-2, physically well-developed Hayes, Harris brings outstanding size to the position.

"It really helps being as tall as I am," Harris said. "You don't see a lot of corners taller than 6-2. It's earier for me to get up in the air - I have a really good vertical - and catch a ball over them or beat them on a route."

Harris was previously committed to Marshall, where his older brother, Kaleb Harris, is a tight end.

Academics - specifically Purdue's agricultural programs; Harris wants to study animal nutrition- swung Harris.

Harris, who decommitted from Marshall earlier this summer in order to look for an agriculture-based academic program elsewhere, also considered offers from Toledo and Air Force and fielded interest from Miami (Ohio), Bowling Green, Cincinnati, West Virginia, Syracuse, Maryland, Wisconsin and others.

"I just grew up around it," said Harris, who's heavily involved in 4-H. "The area I'm from, it's pretty much all farming and I grew up around animals. I just have a passion for learning more about it and maybe having a future in breeding and maybe raising my own livestock."
