GoldandBlack.com Purdue player draft: No. 19 overall

This summer, the Boilermakers are being divided.

Reporters Stacy Clardie and Kyle Charters are going head-to-head in GoldandBlack.com's Purdue player draft, a daily selection in which separate rosters of 25 are being assembled over the next two months. In late July, we'll decide — based on GoldandBlack.com staff and member feedback — which team would win.

Clardie is up at No. 19 and chooses ...

Domonique Young is a long, potentially physical receiver who adds a vertical threat to my offense.

Kyle wondered if Brandon Roberts was on my radar. Well, I had his photo on my desktop waiting to upload and my depth chart updated so … yes. Roberts was going to be my next pick because it would have given me the three best players in the secondary. So I’m ticked off I didn’t get him, especially because Kyle seemed so wishy-washy about his pick. I figured he’d take Markus Bailey (or Jimmy Herman) to finish up his linebacking corps because he’s playing with three. He made the smarter pick with Roberts. But it still makes me mad.

So now the draft feels wide open.

There are some players I really like and want and, normally, I’d be able to wait on them because they’re not necessarily marquee guys. The problem is Kyle and I actually talk about the guys we like, so he knows all of that already. So there won’t be surprises here probably. So do I reach and take one of them now, probably overvalued at No. 19? Or do I go with a safer option?

I’m going safe. For now. And I’m taking starting outside receiver Domonique Young in perhaps a surprise, but I like the idea of having Posey and Young as a combination.

And I don’t want Kyle to have DeAngelo Yancey and Young.

Young has incredible potential. He’s long and physical and has decent speed to get vertical and stretch the field, a plus for my team because Elijah Sindelar throws a very accurate deep ball. So I like that. I’m not quite sold on Young’s consistency — he’ll make a fantastic catch in traffic and then drop one that hits his hands — but with the competition and leadership in that room, I know Young will be pushed this offseason to get better. And the more consistent he is, the more confidence he’ll have. And, for Young, that seems to be a critical factor.

Depending on who else I select at receiver, I could have Young play either the X spot (where Yancey currently starts for the "real" team and the guy who gets more one-on-one matchups) or his traditional Z spot. For now on my depth chart, I'll keep him at the Z.

It'll be interesting to see if Kyle swipes Bailey next, considering I passed on him and he's a player we both like. I already have my next pick in mind, but I'm keeping his pic off my desktop this time around in case that's some kind of jinx.
