GoldandBlack.com's Purdue player draft: No. 20 overall

This summer, the Boilermakers are being divided.

Reporters Stacy Clardie and Kyle Charters are going head-to-head in GoldandBlack.com's Purdue player draft, a daily selection in which separate rosters of 25 are being assembled over the next two months. In late July, we'll decide — based on GoldandBlack.com staff and member feedback — which team would win.

No. 20 is up, and Kyle takes ...

I was surprised — shocked maybe — that Stacy took Domonique Young at No. 19 on Thursday, not because the senior receiver isn't good enough to go toward the end of Week 4, but didn't think he'd be a priority for her.

But a good pick, giving her a pretty good collection of skill position players. It's also coming at a cost to her defense. Perhaps next week, Stacy will consider taking a defender. We'll see.

As for my squad, I figure I should probably start getting David Blough some help — I'm sure he's interested — but I don't think there's a skill position player, right now, who wouldn't be considered a reach.

So I'll go with the next offensive lineman up, taking right tackle Matt McCann. The redshirt freshman enjoyed a good spring, when he settled as a first-teamer in the last couple weeks of practices. The second-year Boilermaker is far from a finished product, but he's big — 6-foot-6, 321 pounds — and physical, looking like he could be good in the running game and a menace to pass rushers. He probably needs to improve his lateral quickness, as he was beat a few times by Evan Panfil on the outside. But Panfil's on my team, so that's helpful.

Despite spending most of this draft behind on the offensive line, I think it's come together OK, with Martesse Patterson at left tackle, Jordan Roos at right guard and now McCann at right tackle; those three were starters at the end of the spring.

I could have taken linebacker Markus Bailey here, but it really doesn't make a lot of sense to do so — because reasons — but will be interesting to see if he's up at No. 21. Or could it be Jimmy Herman? Stacy will have the weekend to think it over.
